NP100 The Mariner's Handbook
An Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) document has been prepared to assist yachtsmen by providing supplemental information concerning the use and limitations of United Kingdom Hydrographic Office charts and publications.
The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office’s reference work in this field is NP 100 — The Mariner’s Handbook (the current edition is the 8th, published 2004) and all mariners are advised to purchase and maintain an up-to-date copy on board their vessel. It may be obtained from Admiralty Chart Agents or online from a number of sources including admiraltyshop.co.uk.
Much of the content of The Mariner’s Handbook is relevant to navigators of smaller vessels, but it is recognised that the presentation and language used within The Mariner’s Handbook is primarily aimed at professional navigators, typically operating larger merchant or naval vessels.
This online document contains excerpts from The Mariner’s Handbook that are particularly relevant to the safe, effective use and interpretation of United Kingdom Hydrographic Office charts and publications by yachtsmen. Where appropriate, further information that adds clarity for, or is of specific interest to, yachtsmen is included following the relevant section, styled as follows:
